In March of 2010, the Guardian reported that over 13,000 lawsuits had been filed against GlaxoKleinSmith. In May, GKS reached a settle by paying $60 million to resolve 700 of the suits. In July, GKS paid out roughly $460 million to settle an additional 10,000 suits.

MDL No. 1871 has been formed by the Judicial Panel on Multi District Litigation in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Louisiana AG Buddy Caldwell alleged in Feb 2011, that GlaxoSmithKline knowingly marketed a drug that could cause harm to patients. Caldwell argues that Louisiana’s Medicaid program paid GlaxoSmithKline nearly $36 Million for drug that was life-threatening, medically unnecessary and/or of substandard quality. The Attorney General is asking for $12.3 billion as part of the Avandia litigation. No avandia class actions were filed at that time, and FDA has yet to ban Avandia use.
