Avandia Heart Attack
The first report linking Avandia side effects to heart attack risk came out in 2007, which stated that use of Avandia may increase risk of suffering an Avandia heart attack by as much as 43%.
In June of 2007, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that taking Avandia significantly increased the risk of an Avandia heart attack by 43% and the risk of cardiovascular death increased by 60%. The study concluded that, Avandia Heart Attack victims was associated with a significant increase in the risk of myocardial infarction and with an increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular causes that had borderline significance. Our study was limited by a lack of access to original source data, which would have enabled time-to-event analysis. Despite these limitations, patients and providers should consider the potential for serious adverse cardiovascular effects of treatment with rosiglitazone for type 2 diabetes.” However, the FDA voted to keep Avandia on the marker, despite evidence that Avandia heart attack were related, stating that the risks of avandia heart attack were no greater than with any other diabetes drug currently on the market.
Avandia Heart Attacks Studies
In June of 2010, Dr. David Graham, most famous for his support of the withdrawal of Vioxx, presented research to the FDA that indicated that as many as 83,000 Avandia heart attack victims suffered severe cardiovascular events between 1999 and 2007 as a result of Avandia’s side effects. Graham studied nearly 230,000 Medicare patients and concluded that Avandia increased the risk of stroke by 27%, heart attack by 25% and death by 17%. At the conclusion of his report, Graham states, “prescription of rosiglitazone (Avandia) was associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and all-cause mortality and an increased risk of the composite of AMI, stroke, heart failure, or all-cause mortality in patients 65 years or older.”However, because Medicare patients are over 65 and more than 60% of the patients who take Avandia are under 60, he concluded that ”the national impact is probably 100,000 or more.”
After re-evaluating the meta-analysis, the European Medicines Agency concluded that the increased Avandia heart attack risk outweighed the potential benefits and the drug was removed from the European market. Shortly afterwards, New Zealand also removed the drug from the market and recommended that patients currently taking Avandia heart attack risks should consult their medical advisors for alternate treatment methods.
Then, the FDA announced that they were halting the TIDE trials. They also stated that, in response to the results from RECORD, that they were forcing GlaxoSmithKline to re-evaluate the drug Avandia heart attacks risks. However, Avandia-related drugs will remain on the market despite the Avandia heart attacks until more conclusive evidence arises and the FDA is instead placing the burden of patient education on the medical advisors while the FDA continues to evaluate the benefits and the heart attack risk potential of Avandia heart attacks.
